Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to common questions I come accross regarding saddle fit and welfare. Do get in touch if you have anything to ask or if there’s any further information you’d like to know.

Common Questions

  • Proper saddle fit is crucial for horse welfare and rider safety. An ill-fitting saddle can cause chronic pain, muscle damage, behavioural problems, and reduced performance. It affects your horse's physical and mental wellbeing, and impacts your ability to ride effectively and safely.

  • I recommend saddle checks every 6-12 months, or sooner if you notice changes in your horse's behaviour, performance, or body condition. Young horses, those in training, or horses returning to work after time off may need more frequent checks.

  • Absolutely. Common signs of saddle-related discomfort include:

    • Head tossing or rigid ears

    • Reluctance to go forward

    • Difficulty with transitions

    • Cold-backed behaviour

    • Bucking, rearing, or napping

    • Changes in movement or gait

  • Saddle fit is still essential for leased horses. A proper assessment can help identify if current tack is suitable and what adjustments might be needed. I can provide recommendations that work within lease agreements and discuss options with horse owners.

  • After completing a detailed assessment, if a new saddle is determined necessary, I provide access to a curated range from independent suppliers across various budgets. All recommendations are based purely on assessment findings, with explicit justification for each suggestion.

  • Please see my pricing page or get in touch with me via the contact page.

  • A thorough assessment typically takes 1.5-2 hours, including static evaluation, mounted observation, and discussion of findings and recommendations. I never rush - your horse's welfare requires proper time and attention.

  • I provide mobile services throughout west-mid Wales.
